Molded and folded from concrete, PULSUS acts as an urban experimental and interactive instrument that reflects the pulses of its surroundings wherever it is installed.

Responsiveness + Urban liveliness

PULSUS is an ambient, interactive, and experimental installation, a collaborative project between INVIVIA and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) Responsive Environments and Artifacts Lab (REAL). Molded and folded from concrete, PULSUS acts as an urban instrument that reflects the pulses of its surroundings wherever it is installed- it listens and provides a tactile response to visitors.

Providing a place for visitors to rest, PULSUS encourages visitors to tune in their city activity. Visitors are encouraged to press their ears upon the cold concrete, to engage to their environment more fully.

The instrument collects surrounding dialogues in real-time, blends them with current digital activity in its urban context, and reinterprets the mix into an immersive and playful soundscape. The concrete blankets hum to every small fluctuation in urban activity.

PULSUS interactive sculpture in New York

How can your city be more responsive to its residents?

urban soundscape

Originally commissioned by the NYC DOT for the 2017 Summer Streets festival, PULSUS sat in the heart of SoHo between August 5 to August 19, translating New York’s communication frenzy into a dynamically changing soundscape that enveloped visitors as they cooled off from the summer heat. The same material that gives NYC her gravity-defying forms shaped this conch shell, beckoning us to pause in our hurried steps and rest our eyelids for just a minute to the weave of generated white noise - though we know very well that this frenetic urban energy will permeate even our deepest slumber.
