innovation and interactivity
When a large corporation innovates, the process of that innovation has to clear many important dependencies. In most cases, these organizations have numerous partners and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) which often make knowledge transfer harder than innovation itself.
INVIVIA, in partnership with BMW DesignworksUSA, was commissioned to undertake and think about a solution for this challenge. The goal of this initiative was meant to create an educational tool for designers and developers in these technology firms to understand the potentials of touch and gesture as a new way of input and overcome the constraints of the mouse and keyboard-centric software development approach.
Project Tivoli evolved into a combination of a software and hardware kit that included tangible reactive objects in an immersive interactive board game environment. This was designed specifically to foster new interaction habits for designers in these companies, in order to reframe their thinking of interactivity and take it outside the screen and the desktop PC. A limited number of these kits were produced and were distributed to the design teams of the 200 largest Microsoft OEMs.
